How to make Mulled Wine?

History of Mulled Wine

In the 16th century, during the time when the Black Death ravaged European countries and even drinking water was unsafe, resilient humanity did not shy away from celebrating Christmas. At this time, mulled wine, a warm beverage infused with various spices, became the preferred choice for Christmas gatherings.

Drinking it was safer than drinking plain water.

Not just for Christmas, this delightful mulled wine is an easy-to-make treat that warms your spirits on chilly days.

The Mulled Wine Recipe

Preparation Time:             5 minutes
Cooking Time:                 20 minutes
Servings:                            6 cups

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 1 orange (sliced)
  • 3 star anise
  • 6 cloves
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 cup brandy

Instructions:

  1. Pour the red wine and brandy into a saucepan, then slowly heat it over medium heat until it starts to steam but does not boil.
  2. Add all the other ingredients and stir gently until the honey dissolves. Reduce the heat to low and continue to heat for 5 minutes.
  3. Turn off the heat and let it sit for 10 minutes. Enjoy while it's still warm, and you can keep the orange slices and cinnamon sticks for decoration.

Important note: Heat slowly, slowly, slowly. Do not let it boil; maintain warmth. Once it reaches the desired temperature, switch from medium to low heat for gentle simmering.

Suitable Wines for Mulled Wine:
Choose a wine with high alcohol content and rich fruit aromas that won't lose flavor when heated.

  • Fruity and high-alcohol wines from warmer region like Spain
  • Wines with softer tannins or higher residual sugars
  • Examples include Merlot, Tempranillo, and Mencia.
